KAMPALA, Uganda — An unverified video allegedly showing missing opposition activist Sam Mugumya in a frail physical condition has sparked fresh concern among Ugandans.

Opposition supporters and human rights activists are demanding answers about his whereabouts, nearly a year after his reported disappearance.

The footage began circulating widely on social media on Friday, July 31, 2026.

It appears to show a thin man struggling to walk with the help of a walker or crutches. Those sharing the clip claim the individual is Sam Mugumya, a member of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and former aide to Dr. Kiiza Besigye.

However, Uncovered UG has not independently verified the video. HERE is the video

There is also no official confirmation about when or where the footage was recorded, or whether the person shown is actually Sam Mugumya.

By the time of publication, Ugandan security agencies had not publicly responded to the circulating footage.

Sam Mugumya Disappearance Raises Fresh Questions

Sam Mugumya reportedly disappeared on August 26, 2025.

He was allegedly taken by armed men believed to be military personnel and plain-clothed operatives from a hotel in Mbarara.

Following his disappearance, his legal team filed a habeas corpus application.

The lawyers argued that he was being unlawfully detained and asked authorities to produce him.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) denied holding Mugumya.

The UPDF told the High Court that searches of its detention facilities found no record of him. The Uganda Police Force also said it had no information about his whereabouts.

His family says they have not heard from him since his disappearance.

Meanwhile, his elderly mother has repeatedly appealed to authorities to help secure his release.

Claims Surrounding Alleged Sam Mugumya Video

Individuals sharing the footage claim it was secretly recorded inside an underground detention facility allegedly linked to the Special Forces Command.

The video appears to show a visibly weak man struggling to stand and walk without assistance.

Some opposition supporters have alleged that Mugumya may have suffered torture while in detention.

They claim he suffered serious injuries and severe malnutrition. However, these allegations remain unverified.

One of Mugumya’s associates also claimed that the clothing seen in the footage resembles what he wore on the day he disappeared.

The associate said this could indicate that the video is genuine.

PFF Calls for Sam Mugumya’s Release

Reacting to the footage, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) accused the government of hiding information about Mugumya’s whereabouts.

The party said it was “outraged” by the alleged leaked footage and claimed it confirmed fears about his welfare.

PFF also accused security agencies of denying knowledge of Mugumya’s whereabouts despite claims from witnesses that he was taken by state operatives.

The party renewed calls for his immediate release, access to medical treatment, lawyers, and family members if he is in custody.

Calls for Independent Investigation

The alleged video has renewed calls from activists and civil society groups for an independent investigation into Sam Mugumya’s disappearance.

They are demanding that authorities either produce him before court if he is lawfully detained or reveal information about his condition and location.
