KAMPALA — National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has resurfaced at Nateete Police Station after spending more than two weeks out of public view following his reported re-arrest by unidentified security operatives.
Kivumbi was reportedly dropped at the police station on Wednesday morning by people believed to be state security operatives. The circumstances surrounding his arrival remain unclear.
It is also not yet known whether the opposition politician will be taken to court following his reappearance.
Kivumbi Disappeared After Getting Bail
The former Butambala County Member of Parliament disappeared on July 9, shortly after he was granted bail by the International Crimes Division of the High Court in a terrorism-related case.
Before his disappearance, Kivumbi had addressed supporters at his home, where he spoke strongly against President Yoweri Museveni’s government.
His sudden disappearance later triggered concern among his lawyers and supporters, who sought answers about his whereabouts.

Lawyers Took the Matter to Court
Kivumbi’s legal team filed a habeas corpus application against the Chief of Defence Forces, the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General.
The lawyers wanted the court to compel the authorities to produce Kivumbi or explain where he was being held.
However, the High Court last week declined to immediately issue the writ after Justice Collins Acellam noted that Kivumbi’s whereabouts were still unclear and police had denied detaining him.
The court instead ordered the respondents to investigate his whereabouts and provide a report within seven days.
Police Denied Holding Kivumbi
In an affidavit filed in court, Assistant Commissioner of Police Godwin Tumugumye, representing the Inspector General of Police, acknowledged that Kivumbi’s vehicle had been stopped at a police checkpoint.
However, police maintained that Kivumbi was not arrested, abducted or detained by the Uganda Police Force.
His unexpected appearance at Nateete Police Station has now raised fresh questions about where he spent the more than two weeks he was missing from public view and who was responsible for his custody.
As of Wednesday morning, neither the Uganda Police Force nor the Uganda People’s Defence Forces had issued an immediate public statement explaining Kivumbi’s reappearance.
