Israel and Lebanon have moved closer to a ceasefire agreement, according to the United States.

However, the deal still depends on Hezbollah stopping its attacks against Israel.

The agreement comes after days of renewed violence along the Israel-Lebanon border. Related: Gaza ceasefire effects begin

Israeli forces launched strikes in southern Lebanon. In response, Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel. As a result, fears of a wider conflict increased.

US officials said the agreement is aimed at strengthening the Lebanese government and reducing armed group influence.

They also emphasized that Israel and Lebanon should manage their relations without outside interference.

Under the proposal, Hezbollah fighters would withdraw from specific areas in southern Lebanon.

The United States has also pledged support for new security zones controlled only by the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue as both sides prepare for further talks.

Representatives from Israel and Lebanon are set to meet on June 22.

The talks will focus on reaching a broader and more lasting agreement.

Despite the progress, Hezbollah had not yet commented publicly on the latest announcement.

The path to peace remains uncertain as recent clashes continue to raise tensions.

Recent fighting left casualties on both sides and tested an earlier truce reached in April.
