Manchester United return to Old Trafford on Sunday with more than three Premier League points at stake as they welcome an improving Aston Villa side in a crucial Matchweek 10 encounter.

For Michael Carrick, the fixture presents an opportunity to turn a difficult domestic campaign around before the November international break. For Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, it is a chance to demonstrate that their recent progress is no coincidence.

The match kicks off at 4:30pm GMT (7:30pm Uganda time).

Carrick needs more than another European comeback

United head into the encounter encouraged by their dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma on Tuesday, a result that ended a nine-match winless run across all competitions.

The Red Devils found themselves two goals behind before Matheus Cunha struck twice in the closing stages to complete an impressive comeback at Old Trafford.

The victory provided some breathing room for Carrick, whose position has come under increasing scrutiny following United’s disappointing start to the Premier League season.

However, their European revival has yet to translate into consistent domestic performances. United have managed just one league victory since the campaign began and have gone seven consecutive Premier League matches without winning.

Their defensive problems are equally concerning. United have struggled to keep opponents out, making Sunday’s assignment particularly challenging against a Villa side capable of exploiting spaces in opposition defences.

The challenge for Carrick is to ensure his players reproduce the determination and attacking energy displayed against Roma over an entire 90 minutes.

Aston Villa arrive with reasons to believe

Villa may have suffered a disappointing 3-0 Champions League defeat against Barcelona in midweek, but their domestic performances suggest they should not be underestimated.

Emery’s men have gone five Premier League matches without defeat, building momentum after a difficult opening to the campaign.

Their impressive 2-1 victory over Manchester City on October 24 demonstrated their ability to compete against the league’s strongest sides.

Villa have also shown greater organisation and attacking confidence in recent weeks, qualities that could cause problems for a United defence still searching for consistency.

Nicolas Jackson will be one of the players to watch. The Senegalese striker has become an important attacking option for Villa, while captain John McGinn and the energetic Johan Manzambi could also influence proceedings.

Despite their European disappointment, Villa have enough quality to make life uncomfortable for the hosts.

Team news: Several important absentees

United are expected to be without Carlos Baleba, who suffered a hamstring injury against Roma and faces a spell on the sidelines.

Lisandro Martinez is suspended following his dismissal against Chelsea, while Luke Shaw, Manuel Ugarte, Marcus Rashford and Benjamin Sesko have also been dealing with fitness problems. Patrick Dorgu has returned to training.

Villa will be without suspended defender Matty Cash, while Amadou Onana and Matteo Ruggeri remain injury concerns. Former United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also working towards full fitness.

The availability of key players could influence how both managers approach the contest.

Old Trafford record offers United encouragement

History provides some encouragement for the home supporters.

United have traditionally enjoyed playing Villa at Old Trafford, winning 24 of their 31 Premier League home meetings with the Birmingham side.

Their most recent meeting at the stadium ended in a 3-1 victory for United in March 2026, with Bruno Fernandes instrumental in setting up Matheus Cunha’s goal.

Nevertheless, past results will count for little if Villa reproduce the organisation and confidence they have shown in recent league matches.

A defining evening for both sides

The international break adds another layer of importance to Sunday’s encounter.

United cannot afford another disappointing league performance, particularly with questions surrounding Carrick’s future. A convincing victory would provide a much-needed boost and potentially change the atmosphere around Old Trafford.

Villa, meanwhile, have an opportunity to strengthen their position and continue their push towards the upper half of the Premier League table.

The key battle could come in midfield, where United will need Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans to dictate the tempo and prevent Villa from controlling possession.

For the visitors, remaining disciplined while taking advantage of United’s defensive weaknesses could prove decisive.

Sports Illustrated has tipped the encounter to finish 2-2, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding both teams. However, United’s home advantage and Villa’s recent league form make this a difficult contest to call.

One thing is certain: Carrick needs a Premier League response, and Emery will be determined to ensure Villa leave Manchester with something to show for their efforts.
