However, the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review, denying the visitors an early advantage.

Chelsea also threatened through Cole Palmer, Estêvão and Pedro Neto, but goalkeeper Senne Lammens kept the visitors in the contest.

Rogers breaks the deadlock

Chelsea returned from the break with greater attacking intent and finally took the lead five minutes into the second half.

Roméo Lavia won possession in midfield before releasing Morgan Rogers, who drove forward, beat Harry Maguire and calmly lifted the ball over Lammens to make it 1-0 in the 50th minute.

The goal gave Chelsea the confidence they needed and shifted the momentum in their favour.

Manchester United’s afternoon became even more difficult when defender Lisandro Martínez was sent off in the 63rd minute.

The Argentine received a second yellow card after striking Wesley Fofana in the face with his arm during a corner situation, following a VAR review.

The incident also resulted in a penalty for Chelsea.

Palmer seals the victory

Cole Palmer stepped forward to take responsibility from the penalty spot and converted in the 64th minute, despite Lammens getting a hand to his effort.

The goal extended Chelsea’s advantage to 2-0 and left Manchester United with a difficult task while playing with 10 men.

Chelsea continued to push for another goal, with Estêvão briefly finding the net before his effort was ruled out for offside.

Manchester United struggled to recover after the dismissal, although Bryan Mbeumo came close to pulling one back late in the game when his powerful effort struck the crossbar.

Chelsea held on to secure an important home victory, with Rogers earning recognition for his impressive performance.

Different fortunes for the two sides

The result provides Chelsea with a timely boost after a difficult spell that included a Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and elimination from the Carabao Cup by Liverpool.

The victory moves the Blues into fourth place in the Premier League standings, with 16 points from nine matches, according to the post-match table.

For Manchester United, the defeat deepens the pressure on manager Michael Carrick, whose team have now gone nine matches without a victory across all competitions.

United also suffered their second consecutive Premier League defeat, leaving them with plenty to address as they attempt to revive their campaign.

Chelsea will take confidence from the performance as they prepare for their next league assignment, while Manchester United must quickly regroup following another frustrating afternoon.

At Stamford Bridge, it was Chelsea who delivered when it mattered, leaving United to reflect on missed opportunities, defensive mistakes and a costly dismissal.
