Health Minister Baryomunsi Visits Besigye at Mulago, Says He Is Recovering
Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi visited detained opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye at Mulago National Referral Hospital and said he is steadily recovering
Uganda’s Minister of Health, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, has shared a positive update on the condition of veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye after visiting him at Mulago National Referral Hospital on Friday morning.
Besigye has been receiving specialized medical treatment after collapsing during a High Court session last week, an incident that sparked nationwide concern about his health.
He also thanked the doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals at Mulago Hospital for their dedication and wished Besigye a speedy recovery.
Besigye’s Court Collapse Sparked Health Concerns
The latest update comes after Besigye’s sudden collapse in court led to his emergency admission to Mulago Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
His condition drew widespread attention, with family members and political supporters expressing fears over his well-being.
His wife, Winnie Byanyima, had earlier raised concerns about his condition, saying he was critically ill and unable to speak.
Medical Report Expected in Court
The High Court recently directed the Uganda Prisons Service to submit a medical report detailing Besigye’s health status to help guide the ongoing legal proceedings.
Despite being admitted to hospital, Besigye remains under security as he continues receiving treatment while facing treason charges before the courts.
Background to the Case
Dr. Besigye has remained in custody since November 2024, when he was arrested in Nairobi before being transferred to Uganda to face treason-related charges.
His health has remained a subject of national debate, with political leaders, civil society groups and supporters continuing to monitor his condition closely as legal proceedings continue.
As Besigye continues receiving medical care, attention remains focused on his health condition and the next steps in his ongoing court case.
