Veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye is expected before the High Court in Kampala today. Prosecutors are set to begin presenting evidence in his high-profile treason trial. The case has attracted significant political and public interest across Uganda.
State prosecutors have lined up at least 10 witnesses to testify against Dr Besigye, his political aide Obeid Lutale, and UPDF officer Denis Oola. The hearings will be conducted before Justice Emmanuel Baguma. According to prosecutors, the witnesses will present evidence linked to alleged activities aimed at undermining the government.
Maj Gen Abel Kandiho is among the witnesses expected to testify. He previously served as head of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI). His appearance has increased public interest in the case. Prosecutors are also relying on intelligence reports, electronic records, and witness testimony gathered during investigations.

The trial follows weeks of disagreements between the defence team and prosecutors over evidence disclosure. Defence lawyers led by Erias Lukwago and Fredrick Mpanga argued that they were not given enough time to review audio and video materials. The State plans to rely on those materials during the trial.
However, the court rejected efforts to delay the trial. The judge ruled that the case should proceed after preliminary hearings ended earlier this week. In addition, the court appointed three assessors to assist during the hearing despite objections from the defence team.

Dr Besigye has consistently denied the charges against him. The four-time presidential challenger describes the prosecution as politically motivated. Meanwhile, his supporters and several human rights organisations have questioned the circumstances surrounding his arrest and continued prosecution.
The case has attracted attention from political groups, civil society organisations, and legal observers. Many view the proceedings as an important test of Uganda’s justice system and democratic institutions.

Security has been tightened around the High Court. Supporters, lawyers, journalists, and political observers are expected to follow the proceedings closely. Analysts believe the case could become one of Uganda’s most closely watched political trials in recent years.
The hearings are expected to continue over the coming days. The State will present witnesses and evidence before the defence begins its response.
