The Government of Uganda has officially launched the new E-Bus Xpress electric public transport system in Kampala, marking a major step toward cleaner, modern, and more organized urban mobility.
The initiative is aimed at reducing traffic congestion, improving commuter experience, and promoting environmentally friendly transport across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The newly introduced electric buses offer fixed fares, cashless payments, air conditioning, and free Wi-Fi, giving passengers a more comfortable and predictable alternative to traditional public transport.
What is E-Bus Xpress?
E-Bus Xpress is a government-supported electric bus service operating along major routes within Kampala using locally assembled electric buses developed by Kiira Motors Corporation.
The service currently covers key areas including City Square, Nakawa, Wandegeya, Ntinda, and Bukoto.
Officials say the project is part of Uganda’s long-term strategy to modernize urban transport and promote electric mobility.

One of the major highlights of the new transport system is its fixed fare structure, meaning passengers pay the same amount regardless of demand or time of day.
Current fares include:
- City Square → Nakawa — UGX 800
- City Square → Wandegeya — UGX 800
- City Square → Ntinda — UGX 1,500
- City Square → Bukoto — UGX 1,500
- Nakawa → Ntinda — UGX 800
- Bukoto → Ntinda — UGX 800
Many commuters welcomed the introduction of the E-Bus Xpress service, saying the fixed fares could help reduce daily transport uncertainty in Kampala. Some passengers also praised the buses for their cleanliness, air conditioning, and organized boarding system compared to traditional taxi services.
“This initiative represents a major step toward modernizing public transport in Kampala while promoting cleaner and more sustainable mobility solutions,” officials said during the launch.
Fully Cashless Payment System
The E-Bus Xpress operates under a fully cashless payment system aimed at improving efficiency and reducing delays during boarding.
Passengers can make payments using:
MTN Mobile Money — 16522# or Merchant Code 594434
Airtel Money — Merchant Code 4405648
The move also supports Uganda’s broader push toward digital financial services and cashless transactions.

Features of the Electric Buses
The buses are designed to provide passengers with a modern travel experience while supporting environmentally friendly transport.
Key features include the following:
- Fully electric low-emission buses
- Air conditioning (AC)
- Free onboard Wi-Fi
- Structured and scheduled routes
- Clean and modern interiors
The buses are based on Uganda’s locally manufactured Kayoola EVS platform developed by Kiira Motors Corporation.
Why the E-Bus Xpress Matters
Kampala has for years faced major transport challenges, including traffic congestion, inconsistent transport fares, and overcrowded taxi systems.
Government officials believe the E-Bus Xpress will help improve urban mobility through more organized and efficient public transport.
The electric buses are also expected to help reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality in Kampala.
Uganda’s Push Toward Electric Mobility
The launch of the E-Bus Xpress reflects Uganda’s growing investment in electric mobility and green transport solutions.
Government plans indicate that more electric buses could be introduced in other cities as part of a wider national transport modernization strategy.
The initiative also strengthens Uganda’s ambition of becoming a regional hub for electric vehicle manufacturing and sustainable transport innovation in East Africa.
