Uganda Airlines has unveiled an ambitious expansion plan that will see the national carrier acquire eight new Boeing aircraft worth Shs3.6 trillion as part of efforts to strengthen its regional and international operations.
The announcement was made by Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama during the launch of new direct flights to Kigali, Rwanda, and Accra, Ghana, marking another major step in Uganda’s aviation growth strategy.
Uganda Airlines Fleet Expansion to Boost Regional and Global Operations
The government says the planned Uganda Airlines fleet expansion will include four Boeing 737 aircraft for regional and continental routes, additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners for long-distance flights, and two dedicated cargo aircraft.
According to Minister Byamukama, the investment will be funded using domestic resources, with no external borrowing involved.

He said the move demonstrates the government’s commitment to growing Uganda Airlines into a competitive carrier capable of connecting Uganda to more international markets.
New Cargo Plan to Support Ugandan Exports
The planned cargo aircraft are expected to improve Uganda’s ability to transport agricultural products to overseas markets.
The planes will reportedly carry about 20 tonnes of cargo per flight, creating opportunities for farmers exporting products such as pineapples, avocados, and other fresh produce.
Officials believe improved air cargo capacity will help increase export earnings, support farmers, and contribute to economic growth.
Uganda Airlines Launches Kigali and Accra Routes
Alongside the fleet expansion announcement, Uganda Airlines officially introduced direct flights to Kigali and Accra.
The Kigali route is expected to strengthen regional connections within the East African Community by improving movement for business travelers, tourists, and families between Uganda and Rwanda.
The Accra route will provide Uganda with a stronger link to West Africa and open access to one of Africa’s major commercial centers.
Officials said the route will also support trade opportunities through Ghana’s role as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat.
Airline Targets Greater African Connectivity
Uganda Airlines Acting Chief Executive Officer Girma Wake described the Accra route as a symbol of African integration and a bridge connecting markets across the continent.
He said Ghana provides Uganda with access to West Africa while also creating opportunities for travelers connecting between Africa and other global destinations.
The airline also announced passenger incentives, including increased baggage allowances of 60 kilograms for business class travelers and 46 kilograms for economy class passengers.
Government Highlights Economic Benefits
Uganda Airlines Board Chairperson Priscilla Mirembe Serukka said every new destination is selected based on its ability to support trade, tourism, investment, and long-term growth.
Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Vincent Waiswa Bagiire said stronger air connectivity would help Uganda expand diplomatic and economic relationships across Africa.
He noted that a national carrier should do more than transport passengers by creating links between businesses, markets, and opportunities.
Flights to Begin Later This Year
Uganda Airlines confirmed that flights to Accra will begin on October 27, 2026, while flights to Kigali will start on November 18, 2026.
With the new routes and planned fleet expansion, Uganda Airlines is positioning itself for wider continental coverage and increased participation in Africa’s growing aviation sector.
