As President Yoweri Museveni was being sworn in for his seventh term at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds before invited heads of state and dignitaries, the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) led by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced the withdrawal of its endorsement of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
According to a statement issued on May 12, 2026, by PLU General Secretary David Kabanda, the endorsement that had earlier been given on March 11, 2026, has officially been withdrawn.
However, support for Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for the position of Deputy Speaker remains unchanged. General Muhoozi reportedly encouraged PLU-leaning members of Parliament-elect to support Tayebwa during the upcoming vote.
The development follows recent comments made by Gen Muhoozi on his X platform, where he wrote:
“I have been Dad’s son for 52 years, but Mzee and I have never sat in a Rolls-Royce car.”
The statement sparked public discussion online, with some observers speculating about possible political shifts within PLU.

In the earlier March 11 endorsement, Gen. Muhoozi had instructed all PLU-leaning members of Parliament-elect to support incumbent leaders in retaining their parliamentary positions.
Part of Kabanda’s statement reads:
“That the endorsement of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively, of the 12th Parliament, vide a letter dated March 11, 2026, is retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.”
Kabanda further stated that Gen. Muhoozi has directed PLU members of Parliament-elect to support candidates that President Museveni will endorse for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
