KAMPALA, Uganda — June 28, 2026: A Uganda media raid disrupted operations at Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda and other media houses on Sunday after armed soldiers were deployed at key Nation Media Group facilities.

The headquarters of Daily Monitor in Namuwongo remained under military guard throughout Sunday morning. Soldiers controlled access to the premises as journalists and other staff attempted to enter the offices.

A similar military deployment was reported at the Serena Hotel broadcast centre in Kampala, which houses NTV Uganda and Spark TV. Witnesses said television broadcasts were interrupted shortly after midnight when armed personnel entered the facility.

Other media outlets reportedly affected included Dembe FM, KFM, and The EastAfrican.

The operation followed statements attributed to Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, in which he allegedly ordered the closure of Nation Media Group Uganda platforms.

By Sunday afternoon, neither the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) nor government authorities had issued an official statement explaining the legal basis for the deployment.

Armed soldiers deployed outside Daily Monitor offices during a military raid in Kampala, Uganda.

The incident sparked concern among journalists, lawyers, and civil society organisations. Critics argued that deploying military personnel against media organisations marked a significant escalation in tensions between the state and independent press institutions.

Uganda has previously faced international criticism over restrictions on media freedom, particularly during election periods and other politically sensitive moments. Sunday’s developments are likely to intensify scrutiny of the country’s record on freedom of expression and access to information
