KAPCHORWA, Uganda — The number of pupils who died in the tragic King David Junior School bus crash has risen to 24 after three more learners succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment.
The fatal accident occurred on the Kapchorwa–Mbale Road near Kaserem when a school bus carrying pupils returning from an educational trip to Sipi Falls overturned, leaving dozens injured and families mourning the loss of their children.
According to police updates, the latest fatalities bring the confirmed death toll to 24. Authorities said some of the victims have been identified by their families, while others remain unidentified as the identification process continues at hospitals in Kapchorwa and Mbale.
Survivors Continue Receiving Treatment
Police said several pupils who survived the crash are still admitted at Kapchorwa Hospital receiving medical attention.
Some learners who escaped serious injuries have already been transported back to Kampala as emergency teams continue supporting affected families.

What Caused the Accident?
Preliminary findings from traffic authorities indicate that the driver lost control of the bus before it left the road, struck a roadside rock and overturned.
Investigations are still ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash, including possible mechanical or road safety factors.
The driver of the bus is among those reported to have sustained serious injuries, with authorities yet to complete investigations into the accident.

Government Suspends School Trips
Following the tragedy, the government announced a suspension of school trips and excursions as officials review safety measures for learners travelling across the country.
The accident has renewed public concerns about the safety of school transport, with many Ugandans calling for stricter inspection of school buses, better driver monitoring and stronger enforcement of road safety regulations.
