KAMPALA, Uganda — Veteran Kadongo Kamu legend Fred Sebatta has shared the fascinating story behind his famous “Lord” nickname, revealing that it was never a title he personally chose.

Speaking about his journey, Sebatta explained that the nickname emerged years ago from a group of close associates who often listened to him proudly describe himself as the “Star of Africa.”

According to the celebrated musician, one of his friends unexpectedly began calling him “Lord,” and the name quickly caught on.

“The name ‘Lord’ came about because there was a clique of people I used to tell that I was the ‘Star of Africa.’ One of them simply started calling me ‘Lord,’ and it remained,” Sebatta recalled.

To his surprise, all the promotional posters and announcements identified him as “Lord Fred Sebatta” instead of “Star of Africa.” The branding resonated with fans, and the title spread rapidly across Uganda.

From that moment, many music lovers began referring to him simply as Lord Fred Sebatta, a name that has remained synonymous with his successful music career.

Why He Wanted to Drop the Title

Despite its popularity, Sebatta admitted there was a period when he felt uneasy carrying the nickname.

He explained that the title created a personal conflict during prayer, saying he found it uncomfortable to kneel before God while people referred to him as “Lord.”

Determined to distance himself from the name, the singer even recorded a song hoping fans would stop using the title.

However, his efforts had the opposite effect.
“At some point, I wouldn’t even respond when someone called me ‘Lord.’ But the more I resisted it, the more it stuck. In the end, I had no option but to accept it,” he said.

A Name That Became Part of His Legacy

Today, Lord Fred Sebatta is one of the most recognizable names in Uganda’s Kadongo Kamu music industry.

Although the nickname began as a casual remark among friends, it eventually became a defining part of the veteran singer’s identity and enduring legacy, earning him recognition from generations of Ugandan music fans.
