KAMPALA, Uganda — Nalongo Maggie Kaweesi dies at Mengo Hospital after developing health complications, according to close associates. The widow of late Ugandan musician Emmanuel Mayanja, popularly known as AK47, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2026.
Kaweesi died on Monday afternoon at Mengo Hospital after developing health complications, according to people close to her.
Family friend and music promoter Vegas confirmed the news. He said Kaweesi had spent about three days at the hospital after falling ill shortly after returning to Uganda.
“It is bad news. God has called her. She had just come back to the country,” Vegas said.

Vegas added that although Kaweesi often travelled in and out of Uganda, her condition worsened after she developed complications affecting her internal organs.
“She developed complications with her internal organs. She passed away moments ago at Mengo Hospital. We are at the hospital. She had spent three days here.”
The family had not released details about her illness, funeral arrangements, or burial programme by the time of publication.

Nalongo Maggie Kaweesi became widely known through her marriage to AK47, one of Uganda’s most talented musicians and a member of the famous Mayanja family.
AK47, whose real name was Emmanuel Mayanja, died in March 2015. He left behind a lasting legacy in Uganda’s music industry.
The couple had twins together. After AK47’s death, Kaweesi continued raising their children while living abroad. She later returned them to Uganda for a reunion with the Mayanja family.

Kaweesi remained in the public spotlight for years after her husband’s death.
In July 2021, she held a traditional introduction ceremony with musician Rabadaba in Entebbe. They later moved to the United Kingdom, but their relationship ended after public disagreements.

Her death has left AK47’s fans and Uganda’s entertainment community mourning. Many continue to remember her connection to one of the country’s most celebrated music families.
