Ben Foster Retires From Professional Football At Age 40

Former Manchester United and England goalkeeper Ben Foster has announced his retirement from professional football at age 40.

The 40-year-old, who previously hung up his gloves in September last year, had a change of heart in March and joined Wrexham AFC, co-owned by Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds.

However, he helped the Dragons be promoted to League Two and penned down a one-year contract with the club.

The decision came after he extended his contract with Division 2 of the EFL, Wrexham, where he had poor performances this year.

Nonetheless, the former England goalkeeper has once again decided to leave the game. He is just 10 weeks into his contract and has featured in four games of the new league season. His last games with the Dragons saw him concede five goals in a dramatic 5-5 draw against Swindon on August 19.

The honest truth is that my performances this season haven’t reached the level I demand of myself, and I feel now is the right time to retire.

At the forefront of my mind when making this decision was not only what’s best for me but also the club, and making this decision now gives the club every opportunity to assess their options before the window closes.

Additionally, Foster played 12 games for Wrexham in total and was part of the squad that won six of the games while keeping two clean sheets.

Manager Phil Parkinson said, “Ben has been a model professional while at Wrexham and has done everything we’ve asked of him”.

It takes a big person to make the decision he has made and one who understands this football club to understand the timing of his decision.

Foster’s career so far:
Born on April 3, 1983, in England

He began his professional career at Stoke City in 2001, where he joined from Warwick.

After joining Stoke City, he went on loan spells at Bristol City, Tiverton Town, Stafford Rangers, Kidderminster Harriers, and Wrexham.

He joined Manchester United in 2005, where he struggled to make the first team, leading two successive loan spells at Watford from July 2005 until the end of the 2006–07 season.

Having played just 23 games for Manchester United (inclusive of the league cup-winning team of 2009 and 2010),

In May 2010, he moved to Birmingham, ever present in the league for Birmingham.

He was also part of the team that won the 2011 League Cup, making 43 appearances in that season.

He went on loan to West Brom in the following campaign season as Birmingham City suffered relegation.

He featured 223 times across eight seasons with the club, where he was named the club supporters player of the season on four different occasions.

In 2018, he returned to Watford, where he was previously loaned, after four years with the club.

He announced his retirement following the expiration of his contract with the club.
