Kampala, Uganda — May 4, 2026 — Unknown assailants broke into the headquarters of the Bank of Uganda overnight and made off with several laptops in a security breach that has raised concerns about the safety of critical government infrastructure.
According to preliminary reports, the break-in occurred during the late hours of Sunday night, with the attackers reportedly gaining unauthorized access to office premises before stealing at least seven laptops.
Authorities have since launched investigations into the incident, with security agencies reviewing CCTV footage and assessing how the perpetrators bypassed existing security systems at the central bank.
Security Concerns Raised
The breach has sparked serious questions regarding internal security protocols at one of the country’s most sensitive financial institutions. Experts warn that beyond the loss of physical devices, the potential exposure of sensitive financial or institutional data could pose a broader risk.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether the stolen laptops contained confidential information.

Police Investigations Ongoing
Law enforcement agencies have taken over the case and are working to establish the identities of the suspects and recover the stolen items.
Preliminary findings suggest the attackers may have had prior knowledge of the premises, although this has not been officially confirmed.
Institution Yet to Issue Full Statement
By the time of publication, the Bank of Uganda had not released a detailed public statement regarding the incident. However, sources indicate that internal audits and security reviews are already underway.
Growing Concern Over Institutional Security
This incident adds to a growing list of security breaches targeting major institutions, raising concerns about preparedness and response systems in safeguarding national assets.
Investigations are expected to continue over the coming days, with authorities likely to provide updates as more details emerge.
