KAMPALA, Uganda — The Kiseka Market Shooting incident caused panic among traders after a police operation involving gunfire forced shops to close temporarily.
Several traders along Aga Khan Road said they closed their businesses for more than two hours on Monday. The closure followed an attempted arrest by plain-clothed security operatives at Original Kiseka Spare Parts Centre Arcade.
Traders said the situation became tense after some people questioned the officers’ identities and asked why the arrest was being made.
Traders Describe Kiseka Market Shooting Panic
A trader who witnessed the incident said officers arrived in a “drone” vehicle. They later entered a spare parts shop on the second floor of the building.
The trader claimed that three armed officers tried to arrest a colleague. The situation became tense when the trader asked them to identify themselves and explain the charges.
The confrontation attracted attention from other traders. They questioned the operation and demanded answers.
The trader said more officers later joined the scene. Some allegedly fired shots as people inside the arcade ran for safety.
“People started shouting and asking who they were and where they were taking him. The situation became chaotic as people ran to save their lives,” the trader said.
Traders Close Shops After Kiseka Market Shooting
Another trader, Joseph Akiiki, said the incident caused panic. Businesses closed as customers and workers searched for safety.
He said many traders were confused about the operation because some officers were wearing civilian clothes.
“We shut our shops and fled to save our lives. We do not understand why there was shooting,” Akiiki said.
Videos recorded by members of the public showing armed individuals inside the market spread online. The footage sparked debate about security operations in crowded areas.
Police Respond After Kiseka Market Shooting
Police spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma confirmed that officers were at Original Kiseka Spare Parts Centre to arrest suspected offenders.
Kituuma said some individuals became violent and tried to block the arrest. He said officers fired warning shots to disperse the crowd and restore order.
The incident has renewed debate about security operations, especially when plain-clothed officers carry out arrests in busy public places.
Authorities have not released more details about the suspects targeted or confirmed whether any arrests were made.
