Kampala, Uganda — April 16, 2026 — Authorities in Uganda have uncovered a massive smuggling attempt after the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) intercepted cargo worth $10.2 million hidden inside a container bound for Turkey.
Authorities said the shipment was flagged during routine inspection procedures, raising suspicion over inconsistencies in the declared contents.
How the Cargo Was Discovered
According to URA officials, the container was subjected to detailed scanning and verification after intelligence reports indicated possible concealment of undeclared goods.
URA enforcement teams confirmed that the cargo had been deliberately misdeclared in an attempt to evade taxes and bypass export regulations.
URA spokespersons Robert Kalumba said the seizure is among the largest recorded in recent years
The interception highlights the increasing use of sophisticated methods by smugglers to move high-value goods across borders.

Value and Nature of the Seizure
Preliminary findings indicate that the recovered items are valued at over $10.2 million, making it one of the most significant seizures in recent enforcement operations.
Authorities have not disclosed full details of the contents but noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the origin, ownership, and intended recipients of the cargo.

Crackdown on Smuggling Intensifies
The development comes amid heightened efforts by URA and other agencies to combat illicit trade and protect government revenue.
Uganda has in recent years strengthened cargo monitoring systems and enforcement operations to detect smuggled goods hidden in containers.
Officials warn that individuals or companies involved in illegal trade risk severe penalties, including confiscation of goods and prosecution.
URA says investigations are underway to identify those responsible and establish whether the operation is linked to a wider smuggling network.
Authorities emphasized that enforcement will be intensified at key entry and exit points to prevent similar incidents.
The interception of the Turkey-bound cargo underscores the scale of smuggling challenges facing Uganda’s trade system.
As enforcement agencies tighten controls, the case serves as a strong warning to those attempting to evade tax laws and exploit international trade routes.
