Former Ethics and Integrity Minister Miria Matembe has today been granted a cash bail of Shs 3 million by court in a case stemming from alleged sectarian remarks.

The veteran politician and outspoken government critic has been in custody at Luzira Prison after being charged over statements prosecutors claim were intended to promote hostility and ill will against members of the Banyankole community.

Matembe’s arrest and remand attracted widespread attention across the country, with political activists, lawyers, and civil society groups closely following the proceedings due to her long history in Uganda’s political landscape.

During today’s hearing, the court ruled that Matembe be released on bail after presenting sureties considered substantial by the magistrate. The court directed that she deposit Shs 3 million in cash before regaining her freedom as the case continues.

Despite the ruling being welcomed by her supporters, uncertainty remained over whether the payment process and prison clearance would be completed before official closing hours.

Outside court, supporters gathered in small groups discussing ways to quickly raise and process the money to avoid Matembe spending another night behind bars.

Matembe first rose to national prominence during the early years of the NRM government, serving as minister for ethics and integrity and later as a member of Parliament. Over time, she became one of the strongest critics of corruption, governance failures, and human rights abuses, earning both admiration and criticism for her outspoken style.

Her latest prosecution has since triggered debate over freedom of expression and political tolerance in Uganda, with different groups interpreting the case through sharply divided political lenses.

The court is expected to resume hearing the matter at a later date to be communicated by the magistrate.
