It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mathew Bukenya, the former Executive Secretary of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).
However, Bukenya, who was reportedly in his early 90s, died on Sunday night, with his death being confirmed on Monday, July 22, by UNEB Spokesperson Jennifer Kalule.
Matthew Bukenya’s legacy at UNEB is both profound and enduring. Initially an accountant, Bukenya was brought out of retirement in 1997 to lead UNEB, succeeding David Livingstone Ongom after the latter’s dismissal by the government. His tenure as Executive Secretary lasted over 17 years, a period marked by significant advancements and reforms in Uganda’s examination system.
During his time at UNEB, Bukenya was a beacon of integrity and dedication. He was instrumental in modernizing the board’s operations and enhancing the credibility and fairness of national examinations. His leadership ensured that UNEB maintained high standards and served as a reliable custodian of the country’s educational assessments.
