The Makindye Standards, Utilities, and Wildlife Court has ordered PRO Industries Pte Limited to restore Ngaju Wetland in Luweero District after convicting the company for illegally discharging untreated industrial waste.
The court imposed a fine of UGX 75 million and directed the company to restore the degraded wetland within 30 days under supervision from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
The ruling followed a guilty plea entered by the company’s manager, Adrian Caesar Mugabe, before Chief Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu.
Mugabe admitted that the company discharged untreated wastewater and sludge into the wetland located in Ndibulungi Village, Kakabala Parish, in Butuntumula Sub-county.

He informed the court that the company has since installed a new treatment system and implemented measures aimed at preventing future pollution.
The prosecution told the court that the company failed to comply with conditions outlined in its Environmental and Social Impact Assessment approval certificate.
The charges were brought under the National Environment Act, Cap. 181.
Investigators established that between November 2025 and January 2026, the company discharged untreated effluent into the wetland despite holding a valid environmental approval certificate.
The pollution reportedly affected nearby vegetation, private property, and neighboring gardens.
Water samples collected from the affected area showed carbon dioxide levels exceeding the permitted effluent discharge standards.
NEMA welcomed the court decision, noting that it reinforces enforcement of environmental protection laws.
According to NEMA spokesperson Naomi Karekaho, the ruling sends a strong warning to companies that environmental violations will attract serious legal consequences.
