Kiboga, Uganda — April 17, 2026 — Police in Kiboga District have foiled an attempted child marriage involving a 15-year-old student, arresting eight suspects in a swift operation.
According to police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi, the suspects are expected to be charged in court as investigations continue.
Police said the incident was reported by concerned community members, prompting immediate intervention to stop the illegal ceremony before it could take place.
Arrests and Rescue
Authorities confirmed that the minor was rescued safely and is currently under protection as investigations continue.
Eight individuals suspected to have played a role in organizing the marriage were arrested at the scene. Officers say the suspects are being held as authorities prepare to press charges related to child abuse and illegal marriage practices, under Uganda’s Children Act, which prohibits child marriage and protects minors from exploitation.
Police condemned the act, emphasizing that child marriage remains a serious criminal offense under Ugandan law.
SSP Lameck Kigozi, regional police spokesperson in Kiboga, urged the public to report similar cases, noting that early intervention is key to protecting vulnerable children.
