Turkey-based Ugandan government critic Fred Lumbuye has dismissed rumors claiming he was arrested.
Lumbuye stated that unknown individuals hacked his social media accounts and spread false information through his pages.
The Turkey-based Ugandan government critic is widely known for his anti-government commentary while living in exile in Turkey.
In 2021, Uncovered UG published a story reporting that Lumbuye had allegedly been detained in Turkey over online activities and immigration-related issues.

The latest rumors emerged after the Chief of Defense Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, previously made remarks calling on the Turkish Embassy to take action against Lumbuye over his criticism of the Ugandan government.

On Thursday, May 14, 2026, rumors of Lumbuye’s alleged arrest began circulating widely across social media platforms. Several posts appeared on pages linked to him, including “Lumbuye Fred,” “Lumbuye Broadcasting Service TV,” and “Fred Kajubi.”
Some posts claimed that Lumbuye had “quit the struggle,” while others alleged that several officials from National Unity Platform (NUP) were government agents planted within the opposition party.
However, by Thursday afternoon, neither Turkish nor Ugandan authorities had officially confirmed any arrest.
In a video message later shared on TikTok, Lumbuye assured his followers that he was safe and had not been detained.
“I wish to inform all my followers and supporters of change not to be afraid. I have not been arrested,” Lumbuye said.
“As you know, I usually sleep at midnight, but when I woke up this morning, I found many messages informing me that my pages had been taken over.”
He added that hackers had gained access to his accounts and were posting messages without his knowledge.
“I wish to inform Ugandans to remain calm. Whatever happened was done by extremists who have their own intentions. Whatever was written, I am not responsible for it, and I currently have no access to the pages. I will inform you about the new pages I am opening,” he added.
