Bugiri, Uganda — April 21, 2026 — A fisheries officer in Bugiri District has been killed in a tragic road accident on the Tororo–Jinja highway after a taxi he was traveling in was involved in a fatal crash.

The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, left the officer dead instantly, while other passengers aboard the vehicle sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Preliminary investigations by police indicate that the crash may have resulted from reckless driving, with authorities pointing to fierce competition among taxi operators for passengers—locally known as “stage wars”—as a possible contributing factor.

In a concerning development, the taxi driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash and is currently being hunted by police. Authorities say the driver will face serious charges, including causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

The Tororo–Jinja highway, a key route linking eastern Uganda to major trade hubs, has long been associated with a high number of road accidents, many of them fatal. Traffic officers have repeatedly cited speeding, poor judgment during overtaking, and general driver indiscipline as leading causes.

Colleagues in Bugiri District have mourned the deceased officer as a committed professional who worked closely with fishing communities, contributing to the management and sustainability of fisheries resources in the area.

Local leaders have since called for tighter enforcement of traffic regulations and increased road safety awareness, warning that such preventable tragedies continue to claim lives across the country.

Police say investigations into the incident are ongoing as efforts to locate the fleeing driver intensify.
