Veteran musician and Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu has died after being attacked by unidentified assailants in Kibuli, Kampala.
Matovu, popularly known as Papa Moi, was attacked on the morning of September 24, 2026, at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division, according to police.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said the attackers struck Matovu on the head, causing severe blood loss.
Matovu was rushed to Kibuli Hospital for treatment but later died from the injuries sustained in the attack.
Police have since opened a murder investigation as detectives work to establish what happened and identify those responsible.
“Our task team is currently at the scene conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Efforts are also underway to identify and apprehend the suspected assailants,” Kawala said.
Kabalagala Police registered the case as suspected murder. Police had not disclosed the number of attackers, the weapon used or a possible motive by the time of publication.
No arrests had been announced.
A five-decade musical journey
Matovu was 77 and had spent decades shaping Uganda’s music scene.
He was among the musicians who helped establish Afrigo Band in 1975, going on to lead the group through five decades of performances.
As a singer and saxophonist, Matovu became one of Uganda’s most recognisable musicians. Afrigo Band, one of Uganda’s longest-serving music groups, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025.
Born in Kawempe on June 19, 1949, Matovu began his professional music career in 1967. He later performed with Cranes Band before joining other musicians in forming Afrigo Band.
Before fully dedicating himself to music, Matovu also played football for several clubs.
His death marks the loss of one of the musicians whose career stretched across generations of Ugandan music lovers.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding Matovu’s death are ongoing.
