Government of Uganda faces criticism over Nyamwamba River

Concerns are rising among Kasese residents and local leaders regarding the government’s approach to mitigating issues related to the Nyamwamba River.

However, despite allocating over $17 billion for de-silting, the current interventions seem insufficient, leaving infrastructure vulnerable to periodic disasters such as floods and mudslides.

One major point of contention is the lack of consultation with indigenous people, whose deep-rooted knowledge could have played a crucial role in identifying key problem areas.

Locals argue that if the government had engaged with them, solutions like de-silting might have been more effective.

John Baluku, a resident of Kilembe, expressed frustration, stating, “Government officials didn’t engage us as locals on how best river Nyamwamba issues can be solved.”

Adon Kabau, another resident, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for collaboration between the government and the indigenous population.

Bomera Richard, from the Nyamwamba Catchment management committee, highlighted a critical flaw in the de-silting process, revealing that the river channel had been narrowed, hindering the flow of high volumes of water.

The call for more inclusive decision-making processes and a reevaluation of current strategies is now echoing through the affected community.

He also pointed out that many of the gabions constructed to control runoff have either been buried or washed away, questioning the effectiveness of the multi-billion-dollar de-silting exercise.

In conclusion, Lt. Joe Walusimbi, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kasese, acknowledged the challenges, stating, “Despite the substantial investment in de-silting, the biggest part of the gabions constructed has either been buried or completely washed away.”.
