FORT PORTAL, August 28, 2026 — Tooro Chief Prince Charles Kamurasi has summoned members of the royal family to an emergency meeting at Karuziika Palace as the kingdom mourns the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Kamurasi announced through local media that the meeting would be held at the palace on Friday, August 28, at 11:00 a.m.
The meeting brings together members of the Babiito royal family, including the Ababiito and Ababiitokati — princes and princesses — as well as the Abeihwa, a group that includes members of the wider royal family such as nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
The agenda of the closed-door meeting has not been made public.

However, the meeting comes at a significant moment for Tooro, following the announcement by the kingdom that the late King Oyo left behind a Prince who will be his heir.
Who Is Tooro’s Chief Prince?
Charles Kamurasi serves as the Omusuga, formally known as the Omujwera Omusuga, and is the head of the Babiito royal clan, also known as the Ababoyo.
As Tooro’s Chief Prince, the Omusuga holds an important position in the kingdom’s traditional and royal affairs, including matters connected to the installation of a new Omukama.
Announcing King Oyo’s death on Thursday night, Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki assured the people of Tooro that the royal crown would continue.
“The continuity of the Crown is assured. His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom,” Rwomiire said.
By Friday morning, the identity of the Prince had not been publicly disclosed.
Succession Traditions
The succession of an Omukama is guided by longstanding traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.
Traditionally, the Omusuga has a role in the process of establishing the royal lineage of the Prince selected to succeed the deceased King. Accounts of the tradition describe a spiritual test involving appeals to ancestral spirits to establish whether the Prince belongs to the royal lineage.
The traditions further provide for the selected Prince to sound the sacred royal drums after successfully completing the required process, before proceeding towards his installation as Omukama.
The Omusuga also occupies a senior protocol position at the Royal Parlour, known as the Omusanga, during coronations and other important palace ceremonies.
It remains unclear whether Friday’s emergency meeting will directly address the identity of the heir or the wider succession process.
Tooro Begins Mourning Period
Meanwhile, Tooro Kingdom has begun a nine-day mourning period following the death of King Oyo.
The late Omukama died aged 34 after nearly 31 years on the throne. He ascended to the Tooro throne in September 1995 at the age of three, following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Rwamuhokya Olimi III.
Further announcements from the Royal Family and Tooro Kingdom are expected as preparations for the late King’s funeral and the succession process continue.
