Harry Kane has edged Kylian Mbappé by just 28 points to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, following the release of the official voting figures by France Football, highlighting one of the closest contests in the award’s history.
The Bayern Munich striker collected 1,055 points to finish ahead of Real Madrid forward Mbappé, who secured 1,027 points in a tightly contested race for football’s most prestigious individual honour.
Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal completed the top three with 881 points, finishing 174 points behind Kane as the England international emerged victorious.

The narrow difference between the top two underlines just how competitive the 2026 voting process was, with Kane and Mbappé separated by a margin that could easily have produced a different winner.
Kane’s victory among the closest Ballon d’Or races
The 28-point gap between Kane and Mbappé makes the 2026 edition one of the most closely fought Ballon d’Or contests in recent years.
The result was considerably tighter than the 2024 race, when Rodri claimed the award with 1,170 points, finishing 51 points ahead of Vinicius Junior, who collected 1,119.

In contrast, Ousmane Dembélé enjoyed a more comfortable victory in 2025, making Kane’s narrow triumph another reminder of how unpredictable the award can be.
However, the 2026 result does not represent the closest finish in the competition’s history.
In 1966, England legend Bobby Charlton defeated Portugal’s Eusebio by a single point, collecting 81 points against his rival’s 80.
A similar battle unfolded in 1996, when Germany’s Matthias Sammer narrowly beat Brazilian forward Ronaldo Nazário by 144 points to 143.
Messi, Rodri and Haaland feature in the top 10
Beyond the leading contenders, the 2026 voting figures also revealed a strong field of established stars and emerging talents.
Rodri finished fourth with 726 points, while eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi occupied fifth position with 612 points.
Georgia international Khvicha Kvaratskhelia came sixth with 541 points, ahead of 2025 winner Ousmane Dembélé, who finished seventh with 418 points.
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland secured eighth position with 378 points, while Michael Olise finished ninth with 296.
Fabián Ruiz completed the top 10 after collecting 201 points.
