Kampala, Uganda — May 6, 2026 — The Ministry of Health Uganda has officially rolled out a new long-acting HIV prevention injection known as lenacapavir, now available at selected health facilities across the country.
The breakthrough drug, which has shown nearly 100% effectiveness in clinical trials, is expected to significantly reduce new HIV infections, especially among high-risk groups.
This breakthrough could transform how millions protect themselves from HIV in Uganda.
What is Lenacapavir and How Does It Work?
Lenacapavir is a long-acting injectable drug used for HIV prevention. Unlike daily oral PrEP pills, this injection is administered once every six months, making it easier for individuals to stay protected.
According to health officials, a single dose provides protection for up to six months, offering a more convenient and discreet option for HIV prevention.

The drug was officially launched on April 17, 2026, at Lira Regional Referral Hospital by Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng.

During the launch, officials warned that Uganda risks reversing gains made in the fight against HIV if prevention efforts are not strengthened.
According to the Uganda AIDS Commission, thousands of new HIV infections are still recorded every year, particularly among:
Young women
Sex workers
Fishing communities
Other high-risk groups
