Kampala, Uganda — April 18, 2026 — The government of Uganda has officially launched a long-acting injectable HIV prevention drug, Lenacapavir, in a major step aimed at reducing new infections across the country.
The breakthrough medication, administered twice a year, is expected to significantly improve HIV prevention, particularly among high-risk populations.
New HIV Prevention Breakthrough
Health officials say the injectable drug offers long-term protection against HIV, reducing the need for daily preventive pills.
According to experts, clinical trials have shown the drug to be highly effective, with protection rates close to full prevention when administered correctly, marking a major advancement in HIV prevention.
Government and Health Sector Support
The rollout is being led by the Ministry of Health, Uganda, in partnership with health agencies and international partners.
Officials say the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen HIV prevention strategies and reduce infection rates nationwide.
A health official described the injectable drug as a “game-changer” in the fight against HIV, especially for individuals who struggle with daily medication.

Target Groups and Rollout Plan
Authorities indicated that the injectable drug will initially target:
- People at high risk of HIV infection
- Vulnerable communities

Health experts believe the introduction of the injectable drug could:

Health officials emphasized that the new approach provides a more convenient and effective prevention option compared to traditional daily pills.
They also urged the public to seek guidance from certified health centers before accessing the treatment.
The introduction of Lenacapavir marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s fight against HIV, with authorities optimistic that it will enhance prevention efforts and support long-term public health goals.
