Cervical and breast cancers are emerging as major silent threats to women in Uganda, especially affecting those in their prime working years.
In Uganda, cervical cancer now tops the list of cancer-related deaths among women. For men, prostate cancer is the most prevalent, particularly affecting those over the age of forty. Health experts warn that late detection is a major factor contributing to the high mortality rates.
The country records approximately 35,000 to 36,000 new cancer cases annually, with thousands of Ugandans currently living with the disease.
Health experts caution that the situation is deteriorating, largely because many patients only seek medical care when their cancer has already reached an advanced stage.
Dr. Wilson Okot, an oncologist at the Uganda Cancer Institute, explains that the often silent progression of many cancers makes early diagnosis challenging.
“Cancer frequently develops without obvious symptoms, so many patients only seek treatment once the disease has reached an advanced stage,” he noted.
Cervical cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among women in Uganda, with roughly 7,000 new cases reported annually. It continues to be one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the country.
Breast cancer, which can affect both men and women, also remains a significant health concern, particularly for women.

Dr. Okot highlighted key warning signs that should prompt immediate medical attention. For cervical cancer, these include unusual bleeding, persistent pelvic pain, and abnormal discharge. Breast cancer symptoms may involve a noticeable lump in the breast, while in men, prostate cancer can present with difficulty urinating or pelvic discomfort.
Health experts urge Ugandans, especially women, to undergo regular screenings and seek medical care early to improve the chances of successful treatment. Early detection remains the most effective way to fight cancer.
