KABALE, Uganda—Pope Leo XIV has appointed Msgr. Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire as the new Bishop of Kabale Diocese, ushering in a new chapter for one of Uganda’s oldest Catholic dioceses.
The appointment, announced by the Holy See on Tuesday, follows the acceptance of the resignation of Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, who has stepped down after reaching the retirement age prescribed under Canon Law.
Bishop-elect Gubazire, a member of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), brings more than two decades of pastoral, academic, and missionary experience gathered across Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Born on March 3, 1974, in Kitumba, Kabale Diocese, Gubazire received his early priestly formation at St Paul’s Minor Seminary Rushoroza before studying Philosophy and Religious Studies at the Philosophy Centre in Jinja.
He later pursued theological studies at the Institut Catholique de Toulouse in France and joined the Missionaries of Africa, where he was ordained a priest on August 10, 2003.
His first missionary assignment took him to Mozambique, where he served as assistant parish priest at Nossa Senhora de Fatima Parish in Murraça while also coordinating adult education programs in Murraça and Caia between 2004 and 2007. During the same period, he served on the council of the Missionaries of Africa’s Mozambique section.
Following his missionary work in Mozambique, Gubazire returned to France for specialized formation in spiritual accompaniment and the training of formators before earning a licentiate in philosophy from the Milltown Institute of Philosophy in Dublin, Ireland.
In 2010, he was assigned to Malawi, where he lectured philosophy and served as Dean of Studies at the Lechaptois Formation House in Balaka. He also worked as the institution’s delegate for the protection of minors before later becoming interim rector.
His academic journey continued in Jerusalem, where he undertook biblical studies, before enrolling for doctoral studies in philosophy at the University of San Carlos in Cebu, Philippines. He completed his doctorate in 2020.
While in the Philippines, Bishop-elect Gubazire held several leadership responsibilities, including coordinator and chaplain of the Friends of Missionaries of Africa, member of the Asia Section Council, and rector of the Our Lady of Africa Formation House Seminary.
Since 2021, he has been serving as Dean of Studies at Spiritan University College in Ejisu, Ghana. In 2023, he was appointed rector of the St. Martin of Tours Formation House in Ejisu, and since 2025, he has served on the Provincial Council of the Ghana-Nigeria Province of the Missionaries of Africa.
He succeeds Bishop Callist Rubaramira, who has led the Kabale Diocese for nearly twenty years, overseeing the expansion of pastoral programs, education initiatives, and healthcare ministries that have significantly shaped the diocese.
The Catholic faithful in Kabale Diocese are now awaiting the official announcement of Bishop-elect Gubazire’s episcopal ordination and installation, which is expected to be communicated by the diocese in the coming days.
His appointment is widely seen as a continuation of the Church’s mission of strengthening evangelization, priestly formation, and community service both within the Kabale Diocese and across Uganda.
