Parliament has officially reappointed Jessica Alupo as Uganda’s Vice President in a key political decision, extending her stay in one of the country’s highest offices following a vote held on Thursday, May 28, 2026.

The approval was made during a plenary sitting in accordance with Article 108(2) of the Constitution, which requires that the President’s nominee for Vice President be confirmed by Parliament through a simple majority vote.

Alupo, who has served as Vice President since June 2021, now returns for another term as President Yoweri Museveni continues to shape his new administration following recent political adjustments.

Her endorsement places her among a select group of senior officials retained in top executive positions as the government transitions into a new political cycle.

Parliamentary Approval

During the parliamentary sitting, legislators approved Alupo’s reappointment after reviewing her record and contribution to national leadership.

“Alupo has demonstrated consistent leadership and experience in public service,” one Member of Parliament noted during the sitting.

Alupo’s Political Background

Before becoming vice president, Alupo served as minister of education and sports from 2011 to 2016, where she oversaw major education reforms and expansion programs aimed at improving access to learning institutions across the country.

She also served as State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs between 2009 and 2011, focusing on youth empowerment and child welfare initiatives.

Beyond cabinet roles, Alupo has served in the military and represented Katakwi District in Parliament, building a long political career within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Significance of the Reappointment

Her reappointment comes at a time when the government faces growing pressure over unemployment, service delivery, and economic growth, particularly from Uganda’s youthful population.

Analysts say her continued presence in the executive may strengthen coordination between Cabinet and Parliament as the new administration begins its term.

Under Uganda’s Constitution, the Vice President deputizes the President and performs duties assigned by the Head of State, including representing the country at official national and international functions.

With parliamentary approval complete, Alupo is expected to officially resume her duties alongside President Museveni and the newly appointed Cabinet team.
