Kampala, Uganda — April 10, 2026, It is now official that National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, has been denied bail and won’t be allowed to attend the burial of his wife, Edith Mufumbiro.
Mufumbiro had applied to the Kanyanya Magistrate’s Court in Kawempe seeking temporary bail to visit and support his wife, who had been battling breast cancer. However, the court denied his request.
Edith Mufumbiro passed away on Wednesday morning, April 8, 2026.

The Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, criticized the court’s decision, describing it as politically motivated. He questioned why Mufumbiro could not be granted temporary release to bury his wife.
In his application, Mufumbiro pleaded with the court, saying:
“I humbly ask the judge to grant me temporary release to go and bury my wife and stand with my children during this difficult time.”

Unfortunately, the judge rejected the request, citing concerns that Mufumbiro might fail to return to prison if released. The court maintained that granting bail would be too risky and not in line with the law.
Mufumbiro is currently facing charges of allegedly inciting NUP supporters to insult security personnel and organizing an unlawful procession at the party’s headquarters in Kawempe.
Emotions ran high at the court as Mufumbiro’s father retired Magistrate Moses Baligeya was seen pleading for his son’s temporary release to attend the burial, but the request was denied.
May Edith Mufumbiro’s soul rest in peace.
