KAMPALA — The National Unity Platform (NUP) has condemned what it describes as a politically motivated “drone” abduction following the reported seizure of its supporter, Ninye Tabz, in Kamwokya.
According to witnesses and party supporters, Ninye Tabz was picked up on Wednesday by men traveling in an unmarked Toyota Hiace van, commonly referred to locally as a “drone.”
The incident has reignited debate over the continued use of covert security operations allegedly targeting opposition supporters and activists.
NUP leaders condemned the reported abduction, accusing security agencies of using fear and intimidation against opposition-linked individuals ahead of the country’s increasingly active political season.
Party officials said the disappearance of supporters without formal communication to families or lawyers continues to raise serious human rights concerns in Uganda.
The opposition party has called on authorities to immediately reveal the whereabouts of Ninye Tabz and ensure his constitutional rights are respected.
Human rights organizations have previously criticized the use of unmarked vans in security operations, arguing that such arrests often fuel public anxiety and allegations of enforced disappearances in Uganda.
The so-called “drone” operations became a major point of controversy during and after Uganda’s 2021 general elections, when several opposition supporters were reportedly arrested or went missing under unclear circumstances.
By Wednesday evening, there had been no official statement from security authorities regarding the reported arrest or whereabouts of Ninye Tabz.
