Singer and actress Hellen Lukoma has spoken out about the financial and emotional challenges affecting her music career. She says the high cost of producing and promoting songs is one of her biggest obstacles.
While appearing on NBS After 5, Lukoma said she still has a strong desire to release more music. However, the reality of the industry makes it difficult to consistently drop new projects.
“I would love to release more music, but the truth is that music is not as cheap as it looks,” she said.
“We’ve seen so many people release songs, but not every project succeeds.”
According to Lukoma, the music business is unpredictable. Success is never guaranteed, even after heavy investment in production and promotion.
She said she is still learning how the industry works. She described herself as “gaining and losing” through her experiences in music.
Because of this, she prefers to take her time rather than rush releasing songs that may not achieve impact.
“When I go quiet, it doesn’t mean I don’t want to release music,” she added.
“It’s just that it’s not as cheap as it looks.”

Lukoma also expressed her long-term goal of becoming a successful musician. She wants to enjoy her craft while also earning sustainably from it.
“At the end of the day, I would love to be a great musician who loves my art, but I also want to earn from my art and be able to release music whenever I want,” she said.
Beyond finances, she highlighted the mental pressure artists face from fans who expect frequent music releases.
She noted that constant pressure to release songs every few months can negatively affect artists’ mental health, with some even struggling with anxiety and depression.
Lukoma admitted she has experienced moments of self-doubt due to public criticism and expectations.
“I have been in a situation where I have doubted what I do because of what people say,” she revealed.
