Kampala, Uganda — April 27, 2026 — Oil marketers in Uganda have denied accusations of hoarding fuel amid growing shortages, instead blaming ongoing conflicts in the Middle East for disrupting global supply chains.

Fuel dealers insist they are not deliberately withholding supply, saying the current shortages are beyond their control. This follows public concerns that some marketers could be stockpiling fuel to drive up prices. Meanwhile, petrol prices have risen above Shs 5,800 in some areas, raising concern among motorists.

Global Oil Disruptions Behind Uganda Fuel Crisis

According to industry players, tensions in the Middle East have significantly affected global oil production and supply routes, leading to delays and reduced fuel shipments into Uganda and the wider East African region.

Government Previously Raised Concerns

The government had earlier suggested that some fuel companies might be hoarding petroleum products, a claim that has now been strongly rejected by oil marketers.

Motorists Face Long Queues as Fuel Crisis Worsens

Across Kampala and other parts of the country, motorists are already feeling the impact, with long queues forming at petrol stations and pump prices rising sharply.

Some stations have reportedly run out of fuel, forcing drivers to search across multiple locations to refuel.

Boda Boda Riders Among the Hardest Hit

Boda boda riders, who depend on daily fuel access, say the situation is affecting their income. Several have increased transport fares to cope with rising fuel costs.

Economists warn that prolonged fuel shortages could push up the cost of goods and services, especially transport and food, putting additional pressure on households.

Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely as Ugandans wait for stability in fuel supply and prices.
