Wakiso — Catholic priest Fr Lukyamuzi has urged journalists to uphold integrity, discipline, and truthfulness in their profession during the funeral Mass of the late journalist Joseph Sseruwooza in Wakiso District.
The solemn service brought together family members, colleagues from Uganda’s media fraternity, political reporters, and friends to pay tribute to Sseruwooza, a parliamentary reporter and political talk show host at BBS Terefayina.
He was remembered for his active coverage of parliamentary debates and political affairs, where he became a familiar figure in Uganda’s journalism space.
Church Message on Truth, Ethics, and Responsibility in Journalism
Delivering his homily, Fr Lukyamuzi emphasized the importance of ethical journalism, describing the media as a powerful institution that must always be guided by truth. He said Sseruwooza’s commitment to public affairs reporting should serve as an example to current and upcoming journalists.
He cautioned against unethical media practices, including misinformation, sensational reporting, and compromising accuracy for popularity or political influence. He said such practices weaken public trust and distort society’s understanding of key issues.
“Journalism must remain a service to truth and society. Without integrity, it loses meaning,” he said, urging journalists to remain accountable and professional.
Tributes highlight Sseruwooza’s career
Speakers at the funeral described Sseruwooza as a passionate journalist who dedicated his career to parliamentary reporting and political analysis. Colleagues noted his ability to simplify complex political discussions and present them in an engaging way for the public.
He was also praised for his consistency in the newsroom, professionalism, and mentorship of younger journalists entering the media industry. Many said his work helped strengthen political reporting and improve public understanding of governance issues in Uganda.
Reflections on media challenge
The funeral also reflected on challenges facing journalists, including job insecurity, political pressure, and the growing impact of social media misinformation.
Speakers emphasized the need for stronger editorial standards, professional training, and protection of press freedom to help journalists perform their duties effectively and responsibly.
Final farewell
The Mass ended with prayers for the repose of Sseruwooza’s soul and heartfelt condolences to his family. Mourners later accompanied the body for burial, marking a final farewell to a journalist remembered for his dedication, humility, and contribution to Uganda’s media landscape.
