A tragic mining accident in Kayanga Village, Kyamuhunga Sub‑County in Bushenyi, has left five miners dead after an informal gold mine collapsed. The disaster has raised renewed concerns about the safety of unregulated artisanal mining in the western districts of Uganda.
Officials say the victims were working in a shallow gold mining pit when the earth suddenly gave way, trapping them beneath the soil. Neighbors and family members were among the first responders, but rescue efforts were slowed by unstable ground and lack of equipment to clear debris safely.
Mining experts and safety advocates have warned that small-scale miners in Bushenyi often work without protective gear, shoring structures, or formal oversight—conditions that dramatically increase the risk of collapses. These informal mining sites attract workers seeking gold to supplement incomes.

Community leaders have called on the government and regulatory bodies to intensify awareness campaigns and provide training on safer mining practices. They also urged increased monitoring of mining sites to prevent future loss of life. Additionally, these informal mining sites attract workers seeking gold to supplement incomes.
Emergency services have completed initial response activities, and authorities continue to investigate the incident while working with local leaders and affected families.
