Kampala, Uganda — April 23, 2026 — A fire outbreak has engulfed Haruna Tower in Wandegeya, triggering panic among residents and traders in one of Kampala’s busiest commercial areas.
The blaze, which reportedly started earlier today, quickly spread through sections of the building. Thick smoke was seen billowing into the sky as crowds gathered at the scene.
Emergency Response
Firefighters from the Uganda Police Fire and Rescue Services rushed to the scene and immediately began efforts to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.
Authorities temporarily restricted access to parts of Wandegeya as emergency teams worked to bring the situation under control.
Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion and urgency as people evacuated the building.
“We just saw smoke coming from the upper floors, and within minutes the fire had grown bigger. People started running out,” one witness said.
Others reported hearing shouts as occupants scrambled to safety while emergency responders battled the flames. Flames could be seen breaking through parts of the structure during the peak of the fire.
Haruna Tower is a well-known commercial building in Wandegeya, housing several businesses and offices, making the incident a significant disruption in the area.

Cause and Casualties
By the time of publication, the exact cause of the fire had not yet been established.
Authorities had also not confirmed any injuries or fatalities, though assessments were ongoing as emergency teams continued their operation. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have started on one of the upper floors, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Police and fire officials are expected to release more details, including the cause of the fire and the extent of damage, as investigations continue.
