Roma has completed the signing of Chelsea and Belgium international Romelu Lukaku on a season-long loan.
The player has once again been loaned out to serie A side As Roma after spending last season on loan at Inter Milan, where he helped them reach the Champions League final.
The striker has not been active in the Chelsea squad and was not called up for pre-season tours to the United States despite having three more years on his contract with the Blues.
However, Lukaku returned to Chelsea in 2021 in a £97.5 million deal; however, his return to the club proved unsuccessful, and since May 2020, he has not made an appearance for the team.
He was reported to have rejected a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia’s pro league and opted for AS Roma. Further, Lukaku reportedly accepted a huge wage cut for a move to AS Roma, where he will be united with Mourinho.
Lukaku’s statement on his transfer:
“The welcome that this club and the fans gave me thrilled me and represents a further incentive to give everything for my new team.
Additionally, for my part, I can’t wait to make myself available to my teammates on and off the field.
Lukaku started his senior club career with Anderlecht. In 2011, he signed for Chelsea in a deal worth £10 million.
In 2014, he joined Everton in a then-club record transfer of £28 million and subsequently joined Manchester United in a transfer worth £75 million; however, a breakdown between him and the club saw him leave for Inter Milan in 2019 for a club record fee of €80 million.
Lukaku returned to Chelsea in 2021 in a club record transfer worth €115 million, becoming the seventh-most expensive player at that time.
