Facebook has been fully restored in Uganda after nearly five years of restriction, bringing relief and excitement to millions of users nationwide.
The update was confirmed on Friday, June 13, 2026, by the Minister for Local Government, Dr. Balaam Baruhagara, via his X (formerly Twitter) account.
While confirming the restoration, Balaam credited the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for the decision, expressing appreciation and saying, “Thank you Principal for unfreezing Facebook.”
He also encouraged Ugandans to use the platform responsibly, warning against misinformation, disrespectful content, and any activity that could undermine national unity or security.

According to Balaam, social media should be used to promote business, create opportunities, and encourage constructive national dialogue in the country.
“Let us use social media to promote our goods and services, foster constructive engagement, and mobilize communities for national development,” he said.

Background: Why Facebook Was Blocked in Uganda.
Facebook was first blocked in Uganda in January 2021, shortly before the general elections were held.
The restriction followed a decision by President Yoweri Museveni after Facebook removed accounts linked to government communication teams, citing coordinated inauthentic behavior and alleged manipulation of public debate.
On the eve of the January 2021 elections, Uganda experienced a nationwide internet shutdown, which was later partially restored. While other platforms gradually returned, Facebook remained inaccessible for years.

During the restriction period, many Ugandans relied on VPN services to bypass the block and access Facebook.
Now that restoration has been confirmed, users across the country are gradually regaining full access.
