BREAKING! Telegram boss, Pavel Durov to stay in French custody

Pavel Durov, the Russian-born billionaire and founder of the messaging app Telegram, is currently in police custody in France.

His arrest has sparked international debate and speculation. Durov’s detention, which was initially meant to last for a brief period, has been extended by French prosecutors for an additional 48 hours.

The charges against him are serious, involving investigations into crimes related to images of child sexual abuse, drug trafficking, and fraudulent transactions on Telegram.

Vyacheslav Volodin, a senior ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has suggested that the United States is behind Durov’s arrest. Without providing concrete evidence, Volodin accused Washington of attempting to exert control over Telegram through French authorities.

He pointed out that with the U.S. presidential elections approaching, President Biden might have an interest in bringing Telegram under control, given its significant user base and its use for free speech and political dissent.

With nearly 1 billion users, Telegram has become a significant player on the global stage, especially in regions like Russia, Ukraine, and former Soviet republics. The platform is known for its role in disseminating unfiltered news and propaganda, particularly during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Despite the controversies, Telegram remains a popular tool for its range of functions and its appeal to various movements, including far-right and conspiracist groups.

The arrest of Durov has raised important questions about the future of digital communication and the balance between free speech and regulatory oversight.
