JUST IN: Uganda Tourism Board On The Spot Over Allowances

Legislators on the Committee of Commissions, Statutory Authorities, and State Enterprises (COSASE) have questioned the exorbitant UGX 1.958 billion spent by the Uganda Tourism Board in inspecting accommodation facilities, only to end up collecting UGX 38 million in registration and licensing from these facilities.

However, this follows concerns raised by both Gerald Nangoli (Elgon North) and Martin Muzaale (Buzaaya County), who have questioned the rationale behind spending so much taxpayers’ money on an activity whose results bring in so little revenue.

Their remarks during the COSASE meeting held to scrutinize the December 2023 Auditor General’s report for the Uganda Tourism Board, which highlighted that Shs286 million was spent on the payment of allowances to the Board members in a single year.

Furthermore, Martin Muzaale (Buzaaya County) in Kamuli district has asked the government to review its policy of hiring mostly elderly people on boards of public agencies, saying these are expensive to maintain, yet many young people are languishing with unemployment in Uganda.

Muzaale wonders why all the agencies within the tourism sector should have separate boards, yet these are offering the same services geared towards promoting Uganda’s tourism.

COSASE’s scrutiny of the Uganda Tourism Board’s travel budget comes at a time when, on June 28, 2024, Secretary to Treasury Ramathan Ggoobi informed Parliamentary reporters that Uganda’s budget is being repurposed to end the habit of public servants traveling abroad to take selfies on tall buildings under the guise of bench-marking.

In conclusion, however, he said a reduction in the travel abroad budget shouldn’t be interpreted by Ugandans as government officials won’t travel, saying the travels will be done, although these will be more purposeful.
