The residents of Waiga village, Bugana Parish, Buliisa Sub County, Buliisa District, were left in shock on Tuesday after their colleague was attacked and killed instantly by an elephant.

It is alleged that the deceased had gone with her two children to a nearby bush in Waiga to collect firewood; upon arrival, they saw a herd of elephants coming to attack them.

The incident happened on Tuesday at around 9 a.m., and the deceased is identified as Janet Bero Pamungu, 42, a 42-year-old woman with seven children who separated from her husband years ago.

When they tried to flee, one of the elephants rushed towards them and attacked and killed her instantly, as the children tried to escape while making an alarm.

Speaking to our reporter, the Chairperson of LC1 Waiga village, Charles Ukumu, confirmed the incident after being tipped off by the two children of the deceased, who told him that their mother had been trampled by an elephant.

Buliisa Sub County LC3 Chairperson Kamanda Kabagambe said that the body of the deceased was taken to Bulisa General Hospital for a postmortem.

Kamanda asked the UWA authorities to compensate the bereaved family and also speed up the process of fencing the park so that people are protected.

Upon receiving the information, the Buliisa Constituency Member of Parliament, Hon. Allan Atugonza, extended his heartfelt condolences, saying it was unfortunate.

He disclosed that they are engaging civil society organizations, the government, and UWA so that they can eliminate wild animals existing in the community.
