Police have taken a woman into custody as investigations continue into the death of veteran Afrigo Band musician Moses Matovu in Kibuli, Kampala.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala said preliminary investigations indicate that Matovu went to the woman’s residence at about 5:30 a.m. on September 24.
According to police, Matovu and the woman were leaving the residence when they were confronted by a man who had allegedly been in a previous relationship with the same woman.

Police said a physical confrontation may have followed, leaving Matovu with serious injuries.
He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider but later died from his injuries.
Woman held as investigation continues
Kawala said the woman who was with Matovu has been arrested and remains in police custody to assist detectives with the investigation.
Police have also identified the male suspect, who is believed to have fled the scene.
Detectives are pursuing him as they work to establish exactly what happened before Matovu sustained the injuries that led to his death.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the subsequent death have not yet been fully established.
Investigators are also working to verify the different accounts surrounding the incident before drawing conclusions.
The development comes hours after police opened a suspected murder investigation into Matovu’s death at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division. Earlier, police said the veteran musician had been attacked and later died at Kibuli Hospital.
Police have urged the public to remain calm and allow investigators to carry out their work without interference.

Matovu’s death
Matovu, popularly known as Papa Moi, was 77 and was one of the leading figures in Uganda’s live music scene.
He helped establish Afrigo Band in 1975 and led the group for decades as a singer and saxophonist. Afrigo celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025.
His death has sparked mourning among musicians, fans and colleagues across Uganda as police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
