FORT PORTAL — Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi has been named the new Omukama of Tooro Kingdom, succeeding the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on August 27, 2026.
The announcement ushers in a new chapter for the Tooro Kingdom after the death of King Oyo, whose reign began when he was only three years old.
Prince Edward Kijanangoma, a member of the Tooro royal family, was selected following consultations within the kingdom’s royal establishment.

His appointment comes as Tooro continues preparations to give King Oyo a final send-off and begins the traditional process of transitioning to a new monarch.
A new chapter for Tooro
The succession of Prince Edward comes at an important moment for the kingdom, where the Omukama remains an important symbol of Tooro’s culture, identity and traditions.
The new king is expected to take on the responsibility of preserving the kingdom’s cultural heritage while continuing efforts that support the welfare and development of Tooro subjects.
King Oyo died in the United States on August 27 following a period of illness. His death sparked widespread mourning in Tooro and across Uganda, with thousands of people paying tribute to the monarch.
Oyo was born on April 16, 1992, and became Omukama of Tooro on September 17, 1995, following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
At just three years old, Oyo became one of the youngest monarchs in the world.
During his more than three decades on the throne, the Tooro Kingdom maintained a strong presence in cultural and social activities, including programmes focused on education, health, environmental conservation, tourism and community development.
Installation of the new king
With Prince Edward Kijanangoma now named as the next Omukama, attention will turn to the traditional procedures leading to his formal installation and enthronement.
Details about the official ceremony, the king’s formal title and the wider transition programme are expected to be announced by Tooro Kingdom authorities.
The transition will take place alongside preparations for the burial of King Oyo, whose death has brought together mourners from Tooro, different parts of Uganda and beyond.
For Tooro, the arrival of a new king marks both the end of one historic reign and the beginning of another chapter in the kingdom’s long history.
