Fourteen people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident involving a taxi and a Sino truck in Lwera Swamp, Kalungu District, along the busy Kampala–Masaka Highway.
The fatal crash occurred on Monday night, August 3, 2026, at around 11:00 p.m. near Kamunga Trading Centre, according to police authorities.
The accident involved a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UA 662AQ, and a Sino truck, registration number UBS 040F, which was carrying sand.
Police said all the 14 victims who lost their lives were occupants of the taxi and died instantly at the scene of the crash.
“Fourteen (14) people died on the spot, all from the taxi,” said Kasirye Twaha, the Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson.

Four other people, including two passengers from each vehicle, survived the crash with injuries and were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention.
Police have since launched investigations into the cause of the accident and are pursuing the truck driver who reportedly fled the scene after the crash.
The Kampala–Masaka Highway has continued to record deadly accidents, with authorities repeatedly urging motorists to observe traffic rules, avoid speeding, and exercise extra caution, especially at night.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over road safety in Uganda, where reckless driving, poor visibility, and dangerous overtaking are often linked to fatal crashes.
