Kampala, Uganda — April 30, 2026 — Ugandan singer Priscilla Zawedde commonly known as Azawi has sparked debate in the music industry after announcing that she does not want to earn royalties from her music.

The Swangz Avenue artist surprised fans on Thursday when she publicly stated that anyone is free to play her songs without paying for them. In a brief message shared online, she said she personally authorizes the public to use her music freely.

Contradicting Industry Direction

Azawi’s position comes at a time when Uganda’s music industry is moving toward stricter royalty enforcement. This follows the rollout of a new digital music tracking system introduced by the Uganda National Musicians Federation, led by Eddy Kenzo.

The system is designed to monitor music played in public spaces like bars, radio stations, and restaurants to ensure artists are compensated.

However, Azawi’s stance appears to go against this effort, as she effectively waives her right to benefit financially from such plays.

Mixed Reactions from Fans and Industry Players

Her announcement has triggered mixed reactions. Some fans have praised her for being generous and putting listeners first, while others question how such a move could affect her earnings and the wider music ecosystem.

Industry stakeholders have long argued that royalties are essential for sustaining artists and ensuring fairness, especially with new systems aimed at improving transparency in payments.

What Happens Next?

Azawi has indicated she may consult her legal team to formalize her decision, though she suggested legal documentation might not be necessary.

Her bold move now raises broader questions about the future of royalties in Uganda’s music industry—and whether other artists might follow her lead. Would other Ugandan artists dare to do the same?
