IGANGA — Police in Iganga District have arrested 28 young people in an intensified operation targeting suspected illegal drug use and related insecurity in parts of Iganga Municipality and Nakigo Sub-county.
The coordinated crackdown was carried out in Bikadho Zone and Bugumba ‘A’ in Iganga Municipality, as well as Bulubandi Central ‘B’ in Nakigo Sub-county, areas security officials say have recently raised concern over growing reports of marijuana use and associated disturbances.
During the operation, officers recovered several pieces of suspected marijuana, which were secured as exhibits for further forensic analysis and investigations.
Police said the exercise followed intelligence reports and community complaints alleging that groups of youths had turned some locations into informal gathering points where drug use was fueling petty theft, public fights, and nighttime insecurity.
Local leaders in the affected areas have previously urged security agencies to intervene, citing concerns that substance abuse among unemployed youth is contributing to rising cases of indiscipline and criminal behavior.
Authorities said the suspects are currently being held as investigations continue, with police indicating that charges related to possession and use of illegal narcotics are expected once screening is completed.
The operation, according to police, is part of ongoing efforts to curb drug abuse and restore public order across Iganga District through sustained enforcement and community policing initiatives.
